Tottenham Court Road, a major shopping centre in central London, was cordoned off by police for several hours this afternoon when office furniture and equipment was thrown from the top floor of a building.

A 49-year-old man has been arrested. There were fears he had hostages and had gasoline cylinders strapped to his body so buildings were evacuated and armed police and tracker dogs were deployed.

Police are now searching the building.

Huffington Post UK, which has offices in the adjacent building, posted a video on YouTube.

Abby Baafi, 27, head of training and operations at Advantage HGV which provides Heavy Goods Vehicle licenses for clients, told Huffington Post that she recognised the man as  one of her previous customers. He said his name was Micheal Green and he was specifically looking for her but she told him “I’m not Abby and I’m four months pregnant” and he let her go.

She said he was mentally unbalanced and didn’t care about his life or anything and said he was going to blow the building up.

Police said there was no indication of hostages being involved.
