Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, running in a special election against celebrity father Joseph DioGuardi, has lived up to the predictions that she would win the New York US Senate seat.

She was ppointed by New York Governor David Paterson after Hillary Clinton resigned her New York senate seat to become Secretary of State in President Obama’s administration in January of last year, Gillibrand had to prove that she could win on her own.

Gillibrand favors government transparency, and posts her schedules, financial disclosures, and earmark requests online. She supports Obama’s proposal to extend the Bush tax cuts only for the middle class.

Her opponent, DioGuardi, is best known as the father of American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, but he is not unknown to politics either. He is a former congressman who served in the House of Representatives from 1985-1989.

He is also a CPA, and is credited with authoring the Federal Financial Reform Act.
