A bad school lunch in Hokkaido, Japan, kept more than 1,000 school students and staff at home in bed with symptoms of diarrhea and abdominal pain.

The offending school lunch was served at nine primary and secondary schools in Iwamisawa, Hokkaido, Japan’s north island. The Japan Times reports that the meal was served last Thursday, and everyone fell ill on Friday. The meal consisted of potato miso soup, salad, and a dish of Japanese radish with ground meat. Those who ate the other set menu choice that day did not become sick.

According to Hokkaido newspaper Doshin, the General Hospital in Iwamisawa City did not report the mass food poisoning outbreak to the health authorities until the following Monday, although they were aware of the situation by Sunday at the latest. The meals for the schools are prepared at three separate kitchens.

Salmonella was found in the feces of several of those tested, reports Doshin, although health authorities have not yet confirmed the bacteria to be the cause of the outbreak.

In total, 998 students and 50 adults fell ill, including 13 hospitalizations, reports Doshin.
