How does the iPhone 6 Plus compare with the Galaxy Note 4?
Apple and Samsung have new additions to the phablet market in the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note 4.
While the Galaxy Note 4 is Samsung’s fourth phablet entry, the iPhone 6 Plus is the first Apple device in the increasingly popular smartphone class.
In terms of material used, the iPhone 6 Plus’s aluminium unibody and sleek, curved design does come across as looking more “premium” and desirable than the Galaxy Note 4’s metal band and faux leather back.
Dimensions wise, the iPhone 6 at 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 and 172g is slightly smaller, slimmer, and lighter than the Galaxy Note 4, which measures in at 153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5 mm and 176g.
Screen technology, size, and resolution differs in both phones. The iPhone 6 has a 5.5-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD Retina screen with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080p and 401ppi, while the Galaxy Note 4 has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED HD screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560p and 515ppi.
While the Galaxy Note 4 definitely has a much sharper display than the iPhone 6 Plus, it is not a difference that will be obvious to the casual observer. The Super AMOLED screen on the Galaxy Note 4 is expected to handle color contrasts better, while the iPhone 6 Plus’s IPS screen has superior viewing angles.
Under the hood, the iPhone 6 Plus packs a 1.4Ghz Apple A8 dual-core processor, while the Galaxy Note 4 runs a 2.7Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 or Exynos 5433 processor.
The iPhone 6 Plus has up to 128GB internal storage and 1GB of RAM, and while the Galaxy Note 4 has a maximum storage of 32GB, it supports microSD cards of up to 128GB, and has three times as much RAM as the iPhone 6 Plus.
As for the cameras, the Galaxy Note 4 packs a 16 mega-pixel rear camera that can shoot videos at 2160p at 30 frames per second (fps), and slow motion capture at 1080p at 60fps, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 8 mega-pixel rear camera that records at 1080p at 60fps, and slow motion capture at 720p at 240fps. Both phablet cameras feature optical image stabilization tech.
The Galaxy Note 4 has a 3.7 mega-pixel front camera that records 1080p at 30fps, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 1.2 mega-pixel front camera that records 720p at 30fps.
Both the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note 4 have NFC capabilities, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, compass, and fingerprint sensor tech, but the Galaxy Note 4 has additional features like the S Pen stylus, UV sensor and a heart rate monitor.
Smartphones need plenty of juice to run all those apps, games, calls, and web browsing, and both the iPhone 6 Plus (2,915 mAh) and Galaxy Note 4 (3,220 mAh) have pretty huge batteries to provide that additional bit of power.
However, because the iPhone 6 Plus battery can’t be replaced owing to the phablet’s unibody construction, the Galaxy Note 4 with its removable back cover and battery pips the iPhone 6 Plus when it comes to power management. Samsung phones also feature an Ultra Power Saving mode for low battery conditions, while Apple doesn’t have a similar app.
Finally, the iPhone 6 Plus runs on iOS 8, while the Galaxy Note 4 features Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
