Germany came out on top 1–0 over Ghana in an exciting match played in Johannesburg on Wednesday to win Group D with six points.
Ghana also advanced with four points, despite the loss, due to their superior goal differential over Australia, who beat Serbia 2–1 in Nelspruit.
Germany will now face England on Sunday while Ghana faces USA on Saturday in the round of 16.
Twenty-one-year-old Mesut Ozil was the hero for the Germans with a powerful left-footed strike on the hour mark for the victory. He found a little space at the top of the 18-yard box and was fed nicely with a clever pass by Thomas Muller.
Ozil, named Man of the Match, had made up for his missed opportunity in the 25th minute when he was one-on-one with Ghanaian keeper Richard Kingson, who made a good save.
Ghana had their great chances as well but poor finishing, a couple of great saves from Manuel Neuer, and a diving block from Philipp Lahm prevented the African team from equalizing.
The match at Soccer City Stadium was attended by over 83,000 spectators.
