Heavy monsoon rains triggered flash floods in southern Thailand that left eight people dead Monday, local media reported.
Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to provide 100,000 emergency medical supply packages, according to the Bangkok Post.
The floods, which struck eight southern provinces, destroyed 12 state hospitals, Laksanavisit said.
Nearly 270,000 people have been affected by the floods. The FDA has already sent around 20,000 relief packages to the hardest hit province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Other provinces of Chumphon, Ranong, Trang, Songkhla, Phatthalung, and Satun were also hit by the flooding.
The governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thira Mintrasak, said that flooding in the province has not improved and heavy rain continues to fall, the Post reported.
