A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Indonesia Sunday morning in Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands.
The quake struck on Sunday March 14 at 9:57 a.m. local time (Saturday 7:57 p.m. EST), at a depth of 32.6 miles.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center added that there was a “small possibility” that there might be a tsunami effecting the coastlines within 62 miles of the epicenter of the earthquake, but there was no expected “destructive” threat.
By comparison, the massive 8.8-magnitude Chile quake on Feb. 27 was at a depth of 21.7 miles. Moluccas is about 1500 miles east of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, and 760 miles northwest of Darwin, Australia.
Indonesia has been hit by other earthquakes recently. On Saturday, a 6-magnitude quake hit Manokwari in West Papua province, but there were no casulaties. In late 2004, a catastrophic 9-magnitude quake in the region left more than 170,000 people dead or missing and half a million homeless.
There have been no reports of casulties from today’s earthquake so far.
