A cargo plane caught fire and crashed in a residential area of Karachi, Pakistan, shortly after takeoff Sunday morning, killing 12 people.

Five minutes after takeoff from the Jinnah International Airport, the pilot tried to return to the airport saying one engine had caught fire, the spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority, Parvez George, told the German press agency.

The Ilushin Il-76 crashed into a housing complex under construction, nearby inhabited residential apartments. All eight Russian speaking crew members and four construction workers were killed.

The plane was owned by a Turkish-based private carrier, Sunway Airlines and chartered by the United Arabic Emirates. It was heading for Sudan with 31 tons of relief aid.

The plane turned into a fireball in the sky and exploded after it hit the ground, according to televised reports.

Officials said that rescue workers found heavily burned bodies after approximately four hours of firefighting and most of them need to be identified by collected DNA samples.

This is the third plane crash in Pakistan in five months. In July, a plane crashed in the mountains near Islamabad killing all 152 passengers and crew and in early November, 21 people died when charter plane crashed in Karachi.
