Sir Alex Ferguson may have fooled just about everybody by starting Wayne Rooney but it was Arjen Robben and Bayern Munich who had the last laugh.

Robben, the former Chelsea winger, one-timed a Franck Ribery corner kick into the back of the United net making the score 3–2 in favor of Manchester United.

Manchester United won the game 3–2 but lost on the away goals rule with the aggregate score tied 4–4. United had lost 2–1 in Munich last Tuesday.

“It’s a hard one to take especially after leading 3–0,” said United midfielder Darren Fletcher in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.

Ferguson had made it clear in Tuesday’s press conference that Rooney was not to be risked but apparently, the English striker has a tremendous ability to recuperate after his ankle injury last week.

Rooney was instrumental in setting up Darron Gibson’s goal in only the third minute of play.

Less than five minutes later, United were up 2–0 after Nani’s clever back-flick found the back of the net.

Nani made it 3–0 in the 41st minute with a high accurate shot after another setup from Antonio Valencia.

But Bayern got a crucial goal before halftime as Ivica Olic squeezed a tight-angled shot past Edwin van der Sar.

The tide turned in favor of Bayern Munich when United fullback Rafael was shown a red card for fouling Franck Ribery shortly after the start of the second half.

“It was a fantastic goal [Robben’s volley],” said Fletcher. Robben and Ribery are two of the most talented wingers in the game and their combination spelled disaster for 10-man United.

“The red card made it very difficult. It was hard to create chances after that,” said Fletcher.

Bayern Munich will face Lyon who advanced 3–2 in aggregate over Bordeaux. Bordeaux won Wednesday’s encounter 1–0 but lost in Lyon 3–1 last Tuesday.

Bayern Munich exacted a little revenge over Manchester United, who beat them 2–1 in the 1999 Champions League final with two very late goals.

Manchester United must now turn their attention to the Premier League and the title race against Chelsea and Arsenal.
