15-year-old Bartlomiej “Bart” Palosz shot himself after the first day of school and later died, say police, who are investigating what they are calling a self-inflicted wound.

Palosz was a sophmore at Greenwich High School in Connecticut.

A preliminary investigation revealed the gun was family owned and had been stored within a gun locker inside the home, according to police.

“The incident continues to be investigated by members of the Greenwich Police Detective Division. With respect to both the family and sensitive nature of this type of investigation, no other information will be released at this time,” police said in a statement, reported NBC

The shooting happened at Palosz’s house, not the school.

Greenwich school officials sent crisis teams to the school, as well as Western Middle School and New Lebanon School, where Palosz attended, reported WTNH

“We take seriously the importance of a positive school climate and the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” Kim Eves, Director of Communications, said in a statement. “Any indications that a student is experiencing significant mental health distress is addressed at the school level by personnel trained to recognize and respond to these concerns.”
