UPDATE: 8:43 p.m. PDT

Earlier reports of James Lee DiMaggio’s blue sedan being spotted by an automatic license plate were false, according to the Santa Ana Sheriff’s Department, reports CBS, one of the outlets that reported that the license plate was spotted.

-------------------------Original story below

An automatic license reader spotted the license plate of a blue sedan registered to James DiMaggio, who is suspected of killing 42-year-old Christina Anderson then kidnapping her children, Hannah Anderson and Ethan Anderson, from Boulevard in California.

A amber alert was issued for the children regionally late last night and issued early this morning statewide through text messaging. Authorities believe that DiMaggio may be heading or trying to head to Texas or Canada.

The blue sedan, a blue Nissan Versa, was spotted traveling north on SR-57 in the Santa Ana area just after 2 p.m. PDT Tuesday, reported CBS

Investigators are following up on this and several other tips as to the whereabouts of DiMaggio. But they don’t have any idea where he could be.

“He could be just about anywhere,” said Lt. Glenn Giannantonio with the Sheriff’s Homicide Department.

The father of Ethan, 8, and Hannah, 16, said in a news conference on Tuesday that if his children have a chance to run, they should take it.

“If you have a chance, you take it,” said Brett Anderson. “You run, you'll be found.”

He mainly addressed Hannah, who is confirmed to have been kidnapped, though sheriff deputies said that it’s also quite possible that Ethan was kidnapped, too.

“I can’t fathom what you were thinking,” Anderson said, referring to DiMaggio. “Let my daughter go, you’ve taken everything else.”

Anderson is divorced from Christina, who officials believe DiMaggio murdered.
