After an unknown Reddit user’s 10-year-old dog died, a veterinarian went above and beyond to try and buffer the pain of losing a pet.

The Redditor posted a photo of a note—a poem—from the vet, who put the dog down.

It reads:

The tide recedes, but leaves behind
bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle warmth
still lingers on the land.
The music stops, yet echoes on
in sweet, soulful refrains.
For every joy that passes,
something beautiful remains.

The author of the poem is unknown.

A number of people were touched by it, however.

“I’m sorry for your loss OP.. It hurts to lose a good friend,” wrote one. Added another, “I really like this...it sucks so much losing a pet, I’m sorry. But I have always found comfort when I knew they were in good hands. Seems like your vet is pretty cool. Again, sorry for your loss.”
