Jeep Compass retains some of the Jeep Grand Cherokee DNA in its signature seven-slot grille and design cues. That physical DNA combined with comfort and efficiency allow you to proclaim confidence, making driving the Jeep a penchant for a “good time.”
The power comes from the standard 2.0 L DOHC Dual VVT inline-4 engine that delivers 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque, and gets an EPA rating of 30 mpg highway when coupled to a 5-speed manual FWD transmission. The 6-speed auto, AutoStick auto, and CVT are available as well, depending on the model. The Compass Latitude 4x4 is standard equipped with the 6-speed auto.
The 6-speed PowerTech automatic transmission has a low first gear for a quicker take off and a high top gear for relaxed highway driving. The transmission fluid’s fill-for-life design helps reduce transmission maintenance cost and time.
Compass can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped, so you can bring more stuff on your adventures. It also offers 53.6 cu ft of cargo space when you put the entire 60/40 split-fold rear seat down.
There is room for three passengers in the back seat, and adequate leg room too. A good combo for quests and gear.
The cabin was quiet. Acoustic windshield helped to keep out wind and road noise, offering a more relaxed atmosphere. The steering didn’t feel as strong as I would have liked. The seating space was average, but driver foot room was inadequate and I would have liked to have a little more “cling on the curves.”
Halogen head lamps, fog lamps, 17-inch x 6.5-inch polished aluminum wheels, liftgate door with fixed glass, and power heated mirrors with manual fold-away are all standard on the Compass Latitude.
The AM/FM/CD/MP3 radio with 4-speakers and audio jack input for mobile devices, plus both 12 V and 115 V auxiliary power outlets provide good entertainment and communication experiences.
There is an optional Radio 430N package offering SiriusXM Satellite Radio with Travel Link, 6.5-inch touchscreen, 40GB HDD (28GB available), and Garmin Navigation for $1,475.
The Uconnect Voice Command with Bluetooth is a more affordable way to go about getting SiriusXM. For $495, you get a 1-year SiriusXM subscription, voice-command support, remote USB port, and auto-dimming rearview mirror with microphone.
Safety features abound in the Compass Latitude. There are the six advanced multi-stage front airbags and the standard supplemental side-curtain airbags. Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation are standard as well. What surprised me was that the Parkview Rear Backup camera on the 6.5-inch touch screen display is not standard, but a $995 option. That does include the features from the $695 Radio 430 (Non-navigation) option group though.
Base price for the Jeep Compass Latitude 4x4 is $25,195.
