Conservative commentator Ann Coulter has called for attempted murder charges to be brought against whoever left six dogs to drown in Florence floodwaters in North Carolina.
Coulter made the comment in reference to a video shot in Leland, North Carolina, showing six dogs being rescued after being locked in a cage that was partially submerged.
The water level was rising rapidly so some of the dogs started to stand on their hind legs, and some were howling and whimpering.
Footage of the rescue was posted on Twitter by freelance reporter Marcus DiPaola, who said that were it not for the timely rescue, rising floodwaters would have led to the dogs’ death.
“Rescued six dogs in Leland, NC, after the owner LEFT THEM locked in an outdoor cage that filled with flood water that was rapidly rising.
“We got them out, but by the time we left, the water was so high that they would have drowned. BRING YOUR PETS WITH YOU!”
Volunteer rescuers heard the frantic canines and rushed to their aid.
As Nichols opened the kennel door, the dogs immediately swam out, whimpering even louder.
The gripping footage moved Coulter to express her outrage.
“Owner should be charged with attempted murder,” she tweeted.
While some users pointed out that animal neglect and abuse are not grounds for attempted murder charges, Coulter’s sentiment that the owner should face legal consequences was widely echoed by commenters.
“That is just a bit of overkill, Annie. Dog slaughter would fit the bill & a minimum 5-year sentence, without parole,” posted Twitter user @nasulei.
“Pets are family & need us to care for them as much as they care for us,” commented Twitter user @AllAmericanPat. “This is totally cruel & criminal to leave these pups locked up in rising hurricane flood waters. The dogs had collars w/ tags. The owner should be located & prosecuted for animal neglect / abuse.”
Coulter, a social and political commentator, syndicated columnist, lawyer, and public speaker, has authored 12 best-selling books, including recently “In Trump We Trust.”
In April, Coulter was forced to cancel a speech at University of California in Berkeley, following threats of violence by Antifa and other left-wing groups.
