PINE ISLAND—Soccer teams from Orange County, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania met at Pine Island to compete in the Sweitzer Cup on Aug. 1. Teams competed all day while friends, fans, and family enjoyed the nonstop action. Youngsters watched the big guys and played on their own on a smaller soccer field.

Middletown was down with two losses, but captain Max Cadet said his team was determined not to leave with three. Pine Bush captain Tony Avelo arrived with two strong teams and made it to the finals against Vernon NJ. Defending champs Vernon won a 2-to-1 heartbreaker.

“We were a question mark as to how we would perform. We’re a fresh team, we’re a new team,” said Vernon’s captain Ethan Eustace. Vernon plays for the Vernon Youth Soccer Program, and on Saturday proved it can play against a lot of stiff competition.
