The family of Alexian Lien, who was beaten in Upper Manhattan by a biker after a group of motorcyclists chased his SUV over the weekend, released a statement about the incident.
A video of the incident emerged Sunday and went viral. Lien was punched in the face and suffered lacerations to the face, requiring stitches, reported the New York Daily News and other media reports.
His wife issued a statement about the incident following extensive media coverage.
“Our plan last Sunday was to celebrate our wedding anniversary by having a nice family day out with our two-year-old daughter. Unfortunately, instead, we were placed in grave danger by a mob of reckless and violent motorcyclists,” Ng wrote, according to ABC-7.
Lien apparently hit a motorcyclist--Edwin Mieses, also known as “Jay Meezee”--who reportedly stopped to help another biker, according to his Mieses’s wife. Mieses is now in a coma after he suffered broken legs, ribs, and a spine. He also might not be able to walk again. A Facebook page for Mieses called “Justice for Jay Meezee” was set up earlier this week, showing him hooked up to tubes in the hospital.
“Our sympathies go out to the injured motorcyclist and his family. However, we were faced with a life-threatening situation, and my husband was forced under the circumstances to take the actions that he did in order to protect the lives of our entire family,” Ng wrote.
She added: “Our fear for our lives was confirmed when the incident ended with the ruthless and brutal attack on my husband, me, and, most importantly, our two-year-old child. We know in our hearts that we could not have done anything differently, and we believe that anyone faced with this sort of grave danger would have taken the same course of action in order to protect their family.”
Ng thanked locals who rushed to her husband to intervene during the attack. The Daily News appeared to publish a photo of a beaten Lien lying face down on the concrete after the attack.
“They truly helped save our lives and prevented my husband from suffering further injury. We also appreciate and are moved by the outpouring of love and support so many have expressed here in New York and around the country,” she added.
The Daily News reported that Christopher Cruz, 28, is accused of sparking the whole incident when he cut in front of Lien’s SUV. He was arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor charges.
Lien’s SUV bumped Cruz’s tire, which caused the rest of the three dozen bikers started to attack the car, prompting Lien to speed off, hitting Mieses, the Daily News reported.
Another biker, Allen Edwards, was taken into custody for attacking Lien. He was released earlier this week but prosecutors say he might get charged.
“We are taking Sunday’s crimes extremely seriously, and will proceed with charges in a manner that enables us to build the strongest cases possible,” Karen Friedman-Agnifilo, the head of the trial division for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, told the paper.
