The African Union (AU) announced it will send 2,000 more peacekeeping troops to Somalia citing concern over increasing violence in the region, according to a United Nations press release.

The U.N. welcomed the decision.

The AU concluded its 10-day summit on July 27 in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, not far from where two Somali militant bombs killed 76 people who had gathered to watch the World Cup on TV.

A Somali-based militant group, Al Shabaab, took responsibility for the massacre saying the attack was in revenge for Somalis killed by Ugandan troops serving in African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

There are currently 6,100 AMISOM troops in Somalia, from Uganda and Burundi.

Summit talks also focused on maternal and child health, and participating nations reaffirmed their commitments to reduce poverty and increase social development in the region to meet Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
