Abu Dhabi hopes its Bu Tinah Island will be selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Tourism Development and Investment Company, a master developer for new tourist destinations in the United Arab Emirates, is pushing the Bu Tinah Island bid.
“We would like to see private sector companies come on board for this campaign,” said Laila al Hassan, spokeswoman for the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabi is spending upward of $7.6 million to promote Bu Tinah Island, according to The National.
Located away from human habitation on the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, the island is surrounded by blue waters with coral reefs and boasts rare birds and sea animals, according to its official website.
Bu Tinah is one of 28 finalists for the new seven wonders list along side the Great Barrier Reef, Jeju Island in Korea, the Maldives, Israel’s Dead Sea and the Amazon rainforest. Voting is still open on the new7wonders.com website. The winners will announced in November 2011.
