A 9-year-old girl in Wisconsin died over the weekend after being shot by her younger brother.
The Milwaukee Police Department said in a statement that officers arrested the parents of Miyanna Jelks after she died from the gunshot wound.
The parents, a 29-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, who have not been named, were arrested on multiple charges.
“Our preliminary investigation has revealed the victim’s minor brother accidentally shot her.”
The younger brother was taken to the Milwaukee County Children’s Court Center. His age and name have not been released.
The shooting happened in a home on the 4500 block of N. 38th Street around 12:10 p.m. on March 10.
Neighbors expressed sadness and shock over the death of the girl.
“Oh my. So children playing with guns? That’s not good,” said neighbor Lachelle Dominec. “Parents—keep these guns away from the children. I’m keeping my babies next to me—very close. I cried all night and was so glad it was not my daughter.”
Family members and friends also mourned the death.
Jones said that the girl’s father has been in trouble with the law before, but he said that he doesn’t think the father knew there was a gun inside of the home.
Jones also said that seven children in total lived in the home with their parents.
