A boy in Mississippi fabricated a story about nearly being kidnapped, police said.

Officers in Biloxi reviewed surveillance tape from Popp’s Elementary School after a 9-year-old student there claimed he escaped from a would-be kidnapper.

But they found no evidence to support the story—the boy had said he was walking to school when a man in a red truck attempted to abduct him, but he fought the alleged kidnapper off—and after confronting the alleged victim, the boy confessed he made the story up, reported WLOX.

Many people had reacted to the story on social media, with multiple parents criticizing the parents of the child.

“Stop letting your kids walk alone. Even in a one mile radius as pascagoula school District call it. They can disappear,” said one Facebook user.

“This is why our kids aren’t able to roam free like we did as kids,” said another, as she noted that her daughter attends the school and walks the same route (with a parent).

Police said the investigation is now closed. It appears the boy faces no discipline for his fabricated story.
