Students at a Florida high school were treated to an epic performance at one of their pep rallies when four local police officers stormed the assembly hall and put on quite a show.

The resulting footage that was shared on YouTube by the School District of Indian River County on Sept. 13, 2019, has received millions of views.

The clip starts with the students of Vero Beach High School watching their football players and cheerleaders take their places in the center of the school gymnasium.

Next, the familiar first bars of Blanco Brown’s popular country hit “The Git Up” plays in the background. The teens begin their carefully choreographed moves in accordance with the song’s lyrics; they do the two-step and the “cowboy boogie,” then spin, do the hoedown, dip, sip, and lean back along with the catchy musical instructions.

However, that’s just the beginning of what’s to come.

All of a sudden, the teen performers run to the bleachers and four familiar faces take to center stage. It’s four uniformed school resource officers from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office–Deputy Sebris, Sergeant Bailey, Sergeant Partee, and Major Thornton–and they have come prepared.

Unbeknown to the crowd, their officers have been practicing for this day. The four men launch into a great performance of the viral song’s dance moves to the delight of the students. As the officers strut their stuff, the crowd cheers and applauds their efforts.

The good-humored officers provoke a particularly enthusiastic cheer when they swing invisible lassos above their heads in time with the music. In a show of solidarity with the officers, four footballers then jog back onto the stage to rejoin the fun, alongside two team mascots dressed as T-Rex dinosaurs.

It’s a group effort and a bonafide crowd-pleaser. As the dance comes to an end, the four officers pass the proverbial baton by nominating another local sheriff’s office to rise to “The Git Up Challenge” next.

The footage has over 3.9 million views on YouTube to date.
The Git Up Challenge is a viral dance craze that took the internet by storm since Blanco Brown’s track of the same name dropped in the spring of 2019. After Brown’s music video for “The Git Up” emerged in September 2019, the dance challenge hit the fever pitch.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook to announce their willing involvement in the fun on Sept. 16. “Last Friday, Deputy Sebris, Sgt. Bailey, Sgt. Partee, and Major Thornton participated in the fall pep rally at Vero Beach High School,” they posted. “They practiced all week with the cheerleaders. Great job everyone!”
Just a few days later, the sheriff’s office posted a response to their newfound viral fame. “It takes humility to build bridges between law enforcement and the community,” they wrote.

Many social media users took to the post to commend the officers for being such good sports and for bonding with the students in their care. “Awesome interaction between law enforcement and students. Bridging the gap!” one social media user wrote.

“The sheriffs here in Vero are incredible men and women who are truly devoted to the youth in our community,” wrote another. “We are so fortunate here in Vero to have these heroes.”

“We love what you do for our students, to protect them, build trusting relationships, and serve as positive role models that can have fun right along with them. You guys are amazing!” a third one chimed in.

One viewer mused: “Oh the possibilities for homecoming pep rally!”

The Git Up Challenge proved to be a fun, effective way for four officers to connect with their students and the local community. As an added bonus, they were able to put smiles on millions of faces in the process.
