4 Americans Injured in Nairobi Mall Attack: UK, Canadian, and Other Casualties

Nations around the world are counting their casualties after the terrorist attack on the upscale Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya, Saturday that killed more than 50 and left some 175 wounded. A witness reported Saturday that non-Muslims were specifically targeted. 

The U.S. State Department said no Americans are known to have died, but four were injured, including the wife of a man working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. No further details have been released about the injured. 

Canadians are mourning two nationals killed in the attack, including Annemarie Desloges, a liaison officer with the Canada Border Services Agency.

France lost two of its citizens in the attack. The statement released by the President François Hollande’s office was translated by France 24: “Two French citizens have been killed in this vile act which has left numerous victims. ... [The president] condemns the cowardly attack in the strongest terms and shares the pain of the family of our compatriots.”

A person with dual Australian-UK citizenship was killed. An Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman told the Australian Associated Press Sunday: “Advice received from the Australian High Commission in Nairobi confirms that an Australian-UK dual national was among those killed in the terrorist attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi.” 

A London Foreign Office spokesman told AFP: “Three British nationals are confirmed dead. The next of kin of those nationals have been informed. The number of British nationals confirmed as killed is likely to rise as further information becomes available.”
