When Mazda created the CX-5, they started from scratch. Mazda wanted a crossover that was not only incredibly versatile, spacious and filled with technology, but fuel efficient, while not sacrificing the driver’s appeal.

Mazda has created an efficiency-enhancement technology umbrella called SKYACTIV Technology, adding component after component over a ten year period. The CX-5 is the first vehicle to combine all these components, thereby creating a super fuel-efficient vehicle without sacrificing driver enjoyment.

SKYACTIV produces 10-15% more low-mid-range torque, yet 15% lower fuel consumption than previous engines.

You also get a new high performance automatic transmission that operates with the silky smoothness. On the other hand, the six-speed manual transmission has a short, responsive throw that offers incredible connectivity for the driver. The transmission is smaller, lighter and stronger than anything Mazda had built before.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV-Body excels over previous ones through the combination of improved body structure geometry, high-tensile steel, and engineering process. This allows the CX-5 to have a body that is lighter than normal, yet it’s stiffer and stronger.

The SKYACTIV-Chassis works with the SKYACTIV-Body in perfect harmony, offering nimble response at slow speeds and stability at high speeds.

The CX-5 Grand Touring is the most luxurious of the three trims. Both Sport and Touring trims have great style and numerous amenities, but the Grand Touring model has features that are usually reserved for the more expensive and luxurious vehicles.

My test Mazda CX-5 had the SKYACTIV 2.5 L engine and the SKYACTIV 6-speed transmission. It provided 184 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. torque. My CX-5 got an average 29 mpg for the week, but as much as 35 mpg highway. This vehicle sips fuel like a miser.

The CX-5 rests atop 19-inch alloy wheels. There is a power moonroof, heated power mirrors with turn indicators, fog lamps, daytime running lights, and automatic on/off Halogen head lights. All this adds to the good looks and enhanced exterior beauty.

There are numerous safety features on the Grand Touring, but there were four that I appreciated the most: Blind Spot Monitoring, tire monitoring system, anti-theft engine immobilizer, and 24-hour roadside assistance. All these make your driving experience safer and assistance is assured when needed. This 2014 model has not yet been rated by the Government 5-Star Safety Ratings System.

This Mazda had the manufacturer’s standard 36-month/36,000 mile Bumper–to-Bumper warranty, and the 60 month/60,000 mile powertrain warranty which guarantee your present and future safety and protection.

Heated front seats, 6-way adjustable power driver’s seat with 8-way power lumbar support make driving comfortable. Add a couple more inches of seat space and the comfort would be even more perfect.

Power windows and automatic door locks keep all 5-passengers comfortable safe. The tilt and telescopic steering column and a leather wrapped steering wheel allows for driver convenience and proper positioning, while soft-material paneling add to the ambiance of the interior.

You will have an air of confidence when you drive the CX-5. Impressive handling makes maneuvering easy and the vehicle is quick on the start while passing easily and smoothly around and through traffic. The rack-and-pinion steering delivers access to freeway space missed by slower and less agile vehicles.

The standard recommended price is $28,870. An optional package that includes a navigation system and Smart City Break Support cost an extra $1,625.
