NEW YORK—After crews said they heard noises coming from somewhere in a large ship among the cargo, the Department of Homeland Security looked, but found nothing.
“The search for stowaways aboard the Ville D’Aquarius has concluded with no stowaways found,” Peter Boogaard, department spokesperson, said via email. The ship was docked in Port Newark, N.J.
Multiple agencies teamed up to scour the 850-footlong vessel for suspected stowaways, including officers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Port Authority of New Jersey/New York, utilizing X-Ray machines and K-9 dogs.
But, after searching in and around the ship, including more than 160 shipping containers, nothing was found.
Congressman Peter King, head of the House Homeland Security Committee, was told by authorities air space around Newark was closed in a precautionary measure while the search took place, according to CBS 2.
“Obviously there is a concern about human life, but also, in the times in which we live, the first concern has to be terrorism,” he told CBS 2. “We have to assume the worst in these situations and hope for the best.”
