NEW YORK -- A donor said that he will give $250,000 to a candidate who seeks to defeat the embattled state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. Bill Samuels, who heads the New Roosevelt Initiative (NRI), said Espada, a Bronx Democrat, is a “state Senator who takes money intended for health care and uses it to hire family members and cronies instead” and is unfit to hold office. Samuels said he started NRI to try and find a cure for the rampant problems in Albany by funding candidates who he thinks can combat corruption.

Sen. Espada is currently being investigated by the New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for skimming $14 million from a taxpayer-funded nonprofit health provider in the South Bronx. Espada is president and CEO of the organization.
