SAN JOSE, Calif.—Seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 5 was a unique experience for Alan Buchwald, a physician, and Randee Ji Rose, a qigong teacher.

“It’s outstanding. It’s very smooth and just flowed very nicely. I’ve never seen anything quite like it,” said Mr. Buchwald.

“The performers were just unbelievable; they were fantastic,” said Ms. Ji Rose.

Shen Yun takes the audience on a journey through China’s 5,000-year history. The New York-based performing arts company presents “colorful and exhilarating performances of classical Chinese dance and music,” according to its website.

Both Ms. Ji Rose and Mr. Buchwald were impressed by the artistry of the performers. According to Mr. Buchwald, you can’t hear it when the performers hit the stage; they are “very light on their feet,” he said.

With a history of thousands of years, classical Chinese dance is one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. According to the Shen Yun website, classical Chinese dance is “grounded in 5,000 years of divinely-inspired culture, and is a dance art form built upon a deep foundation of traditional aesthetics.”

The performance combines the art form of dance and music, with a state-of-the-art digital backdrop, which takes the audience on a magical journey.

“The screen in the back, [was] just so different and very unique,” said Ms. Ji Rose.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world with a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. The Shen Yun Touring Company will perform at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts through Jan. 6. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
