MISSISSAUGA—“It was nothing like I’ve seen before, it was really beautifully done and beautifully executed and you could tell that these people are true professionals.”
That was how multi award-winning graphic designer Amy Morrison described ShenYun Performing Arts after taking in the sold-out show Saturday afternoon at the Living Arts Centre.
“All the dancers were incredible. … The control and the discipline that went into it, it was incredible,” she said.
“I loved it.”
Shen Yun also exceeded the expectations of her husband Andrew Boisvenue, director of retail at Aimia Inc.
“Loved it, absolutely loved it, it was fantastic. The music, the colours, it was vibrant, it was exactly what we had hoped it would be and more,” Mr. Boisvenue said.
Shen Yun is a New York-based performing arts group founded in 2006. The company’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture, a culture nearly extinct after 60 years of communist rule.
“[It's] a colourful spectacle,” Mr. Boisvenue said.
Mrs Morrison—whose clients have included Canada’s major banks and major retailers like Black’s Photography and Barnes & Noble—agreed.
“The colors were amazing, it reminded me of a 1940s technicolor movie … It was really beautiful,” she said.
According to Shen Yun’s website, costume artists collect designs of traditional dress and use bright colours to recreate these pieces every season.
It was incredible.

“Every detail is given meticulous attention and is a result of artistic inspiration and careful polishing. The designers stress harmonic balance and contrast. Their objective is an authentic presentation of the attire that comes from China’s divinely inspired traditional culture, and a consummate stage effect,” says the website.
Mrs. Morrison who’s been a graphic designer for over 20 years agreed that Shen Yun was very unique.
She also said that having a live orchestra performing alongside the dancers made all the difference.
Shen Yun has grown to have three equally large groups along with their own orchestras touring the world simultaneously. This fact alone really impressed Mr. Boisvenue. “It certainly has struck me that there are three troupes around the globe performing,” he said.
Shen Yun’s companies stage performances in the world’s finest venues in over a hundred cities each year. Each year, Shen Yun brings an all new show including new choreography, music and costumes.
“We would definitely attend again,” Mr. Boisvenue said.
