DETROIT—In its Midwestern debut, the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts captivated its audience at the Detroit Opera House, on Jan. 26.

Among the many theatergoers enjoying the show on Thursday evening were Denise Grace, owner of Grace Advisory Group, and Ron Lord, owner of Lord Engineering Sales.

“I love it! It’s just I didn’t know what to expect, but I love watching dance,” Ms. Grace said.

After seeing an inspiring collection of Shen Yun’s costumes, Ms. Grace said, “It’s like, I want all of their clothes! I love all the costumes, I want one of each! I love it!”

These hundreds of gorgeous, hand-made garments span China’s dynasties, regions, and ethnic groups.

“I mean I love the art of it. Just the culture and the art, it’s just so beautiful,” she said.

The performance’s digital backdrops also delighted Ms. Grace, especially its synchronization with the stage performance. “I loved like the computer animation and how it comes down and then the people come out,” Ms. Grace said. “It’s like it’s kind of integrating the old culture with like, new technology, which I think is really interesting.”

Shen Yun’s website says, “Classical Chinese dance is a culture left to us by the ancients who came before us. Its beauty should be riches shared by all of humanity.”

“I thought it was beautiful,” Mr. Lord agreed with Ms. Grace. “The costuming I thought was wonderful! I think the choreography was beautiful! It was a very, very nice show! Looking for bigger and better things in the second act!”

Mr. Lord added that he particularly liked the precision. “That’s very important I think, the precision is just incredible,” he said. ‘They are all just perfect! Just perfectly in time with each other it’s very synchronized, very synchronized.”

Shen Yun, based in New York, tours the world on a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture and stages performances of mainly classical Chinese dance. The International Company, one of Shen Yun’s three equally large companies, will perform in the Detroit Opera House, Detroit, through Jan. 29.
