TORONTO—Shen Yun Performing Arts put on its last show of the season in Toronto with a Sunday afternoon performance at the Sony Centre.

The Shen Yun performance reminded long time ballet dancer Yulia Arsenyev how great it is to dance.

“I think it’s great; it’s a lot of emotion. I think it’s beautiful,” she said about the performance.

Ms. Arsenyev, who is originally from Russia and has been dancing for 20 years, is currently taking a rest from dancing after giving birth to her child. She now teaches ballet to children.

Watching the Shen Yun talented dancers perform their technically demanding dance moves so seamlessly on stage made Ms. Arsenyev feel as if she was dancing herself.

“I couldn’t hear even the steps or jumps of the dancers; I think it’s very, very important to dance very light … so I really enjoy it.

“It’s unique,” she said about the performance.

According to the Shen Yun website, classical Chinese dance is a “vast and independent system of dance.”

“Classical Chinese dance has its own set of training methods in basic skills and has strict training in both physical expression and specific postures. It also involves learning combinations of leaps, turns, flips, spins, and other aerial and tumbling techniques,” says the Shen Yun website.

Ms. Arsenyev said she enjoyed seeing the energy in the dancers.

“You can see the power, you can see all the air in between the moves so I really like that,” she said.

The colourful costumes and the animated digital backdrops also added to the beauty of the show, Ms. Arsenyev said. She said she appreciates having the chance to learn about the culture of China right here in Canada through the Shen Yun performance.

“I would love to come next time because I heard every year it’s a new show, and of course I will come and see one more time the great, great performance.”
