PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Lonnie Barham was enlightened as he enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Feb. 5.

“I liked the dancing very much,” he said.

Shen Yun is based in New York and presents 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese music and dance.

Classical Chinese dance is a complete system of dance that spans thousands of years. “Soaking up profound wisdom from every era and dynasty, it has become a complete system of dance embodying traditional aesthetic principle,” according to Shen Yun’s website.

Mr. Barham is a retired Colonel with the U.S Army and chief operating officer of East Providence school district.

He said that Shen Yun’s stories are very good and he was touched by the rich culture and universal values presented.

“The 5,000 years of Chinese history is enlightening,” Mr. Barham said.

With 5,000 years of culture to draw from, Shen Yun’s audiences travel through China, from the Yellow Emperor, to Tang Dynasty battlefields, and up to modern day China through mini-drama pieces.

Shen Yun was established in 2006 by a group of classical Chinese artist with the desire to revive the true Chinese culture. Currently Shen Yun cannot perform in China due to communist rule in the country.

“I especially liked the part talking about the communist China’s persecution of different faiths,” Mr. Barham said.

“Over all it’s just a very good show,” Mr. Barham said. “It’s very entertaining and very informative,” he said.
