DETROIT—Lana Waldorf, entrepreneur and part-owner of a business in Montana, had an early celebration for the spring birthday of her mother—Danella Kristal, a retired real estate broker, at Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Detroit Opera House on Jan. 25.

Mrs. Kristal said that her birthday gift was incredible. “I’m enjoying this immensely,” she said. “I’m so happy that she offered this to me as a birthday gift.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun presents 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese music and dance.

Mrs. Waldorf said that she thought it was very well choreographed, and she loved the flips and tumbling techniques. “I think the dancers and the singers are exquisite,” she said.

“The costuming is so incredibly beautiful—to see the detailing and the colors—I just very much enjoyed it,” Mrs. Waldorf said.

“Every costume in a Shen Yun performance is presented with brilliant colors, displaying a splendid spectacle—from the Tang Dynasty’s “Raiment of Rainbows and Feathers” to imperial dragon robes, phoenix coronets, and cloud capes,” according to Shen Yun’s website.

She was especially struck with how the dancers used the costumes. She thought that the skirts looked like a flower when the dancers were twirling.

“It was just very beautiful,” she said, adding that the skirts just flowed with the dancers movements. “Its just very stunning.”

Mrs. Waldorf was very impressed with the music as well.

The Shen Yun Orchestra combines traditional Chinese musical instruments with a full Western style orchestra.

“How beautiful the music is,” she said. “It’s quite different than what I thought. I am delightfully surprised at the beauty of the music.”
