PHILADELPHIA—A full house at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia welcomed Shen Yun Performing Arts with loud applause and cheers on May 3.

Shen Yun received warm greetings from local, state, and federal officials before the company arrived in the city.

Mayor Michael A. Nutter wrote a welcome letter thanking the The Greater Philadelphia Falun Dafa Association for bringing Shen Yun to the city, calling the show “an important contribution to the advancement of the arts.”

Governor Tom Corbett signed a proclamation on May 3 welcoming Shen Yun to Philadelphia and expressing confidence that “Shen Yun’s performances will serve as an inspiration to all those in attendance.”

On the federal level, US Rep. Robert E. Andrews issued a proclamation as well, saying that “Shen Yun evokes the message of virtue, compassion, and the strength of the human spirit.”

The officials’ greetings foreshadowed theatregoers’ experiences of Shen Yun on opening night at Merriam
Theatre:

“It was just wonderful. Good for your soul, good for your heart,” said Connie Laino, former director of volunteer services at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Meadowbrook.

Shen Yun’s performances combine orchestral music with classical Chinese dance and animated backdrops.

“Shen Yun’s productions draw their inspiration from China’s 5,000 years of civilization. Values such as compassion and loyalty, kindness and bravery, lie at the heart of traditional culture,” according to the Shen Yun program book.

Shen Yun “makes me feel more connected to Chinese civilization,” said Mr. Philip Schumacher, a former CEO of Goddard Schools.

Shen Yun’s performances can be seen all over the world, but the company is forbidden from returning to China. The Chinese Communist Party has been destroying China’s traditional culture for decades and Shen Yun “is bringing back this glorious culture,” the Shen Yun websites states.

Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org.

Shen Yun Performing Arts is performing at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia through May 5.
