HOUSTON—Dance teacher Sharon Walker was captivated by the movement of Shen Yun Performing Arts’ dancers on New Year’s Eve at the Jones Hall for Performing Arts in Houston.

“Oh, it was beautiful, very graceful and I just want to know how they move like that!” Mrs. Walker said.

Mrs. Walker attended the performance with Mr. Bill Walker, who saw a trailer over the summer. “I do a lot of dancing, I’m very involved in dancing,” Mrs. Walker said, so of course she was interested when Mr. Walker introduced her to the show.

She admired the skill of the dancers and the beauty of the choreography. “I loved the dancing!” said Mrs. Walker. “It is very beautiful, the way it’s all put together.”

The traditional Chinese dance performed by the New York based company includes Chinese classical dance and ethnic and folk dances from the many minority people of China.

“I was just enthralled watching all the dancing and choreography,” Mr. Walker said. “How can they know every one of those moves? It was incredible.”

“Classical Chinese dance has a long history of thousands of years, and while soaking up profound wisdom from every era and dynasty, it has become a complete system of dance embodying traditional aesthetic principles,” according to Shen Yun’s website.

“The whole thing just seemed very peaceful,” Mrs. Walker said.

Mr. Walker said he enjoyed the ethnic and folk dances that showed the different regions of China, as well as the traditional culture that can’t be seen in China today.

“It was nice to have people know what’s going on. So I thought it was pretty fitting,” Mr. Walker said, speaking of one of the dances, which tells a story of contemporary China.
