‘Life of Pi’ Oscar Nomination Reflects 3D Revolution

3D entertainment has clearly established itself as more than a niche novelty, with “Life of Pi” being nominated for a best picture Oscar this year, and Avatar ranking as the highest grossing film ever.

The second biggest grossing film, “Titanic” (1997), was re-released in 3D last year. And the third ranked film, “The Avengers,” was also primarily a 3D release.

According to a report by False Creek Productions in 2011 analyzing box office data, 3D movies are almost 50 percent more likely than 2D movies to achieve a big box office. Of the 20 most profitable movies in 2010, 11 were 3D, the report shows.
