NEW YORK—Renowned as the ‘Goddess of Cello,’ Christine Walevska, cellist and master musician, attended Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on June 25.
She dubbed the Saturday evening’s performance of classical Chinese dance, song and music as “just phenomenal.”
The unique presentation was a handpicked selection of “the best of the best” from a collection of programs since the New York-based company’s inception five years ago.
“This is spectacular—absolutely the greatest of the great,” stated Ms. Walevska after the performance. “Everything was wonderful.”
Often referred to as the ‘Goddess of the Cello’, Ms. Wavevska has amazed audiences of her own for over thirty years of concertizing across the globe.
She lavished praise upon the Shen Yun artists—dancers, musicians and vocalists alike—saying she feels “blessed” to have them return to New York again this year.
Shen Yun aspires to rekindle ancient China’s divinely-bestowed culture, largely lost to mankind over 60-plus years of communist rule. The performance features beautifully-costumed dancers, choreographed to match digitally-enhanced backdrops depict stories adapted from heroic legends, folkloric tales and contemporary times, and backed by the Shen Yun Orchestra’s combination of Chinese and Western composition. A trio of singers and solo musicians round out the evening.
“We’re particularly blessed here in New York, because I understand that the three shows, the three traveling shows, we have three leading dancers—it was absolutely so stunning, so gorgeous, spectacular,” she enthused.
“The singers were just wonderful. I think that everybody here realizes they’ve seen something glorious, really wonderful, and the goodness of all of these fantastic people is just great.”
Ms Walevska’s exceptional cello playing has been recognized by many composers, such as Aram Khachaturian, Ferde Grofe and Ennio Bolognini who have dedicated works to her, the latter only wanted her to play the cello for his compositions, the website continues. She has played with numerous top orchestras around the world. With reporting by Lisa Ouo and Kay Rubacek
