A $5 million reward was offered by Zimbabwe for the capture of a former commander who allegedly ordered the mass killings of 60,000 people during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
Police said the reward will be given for information on the location of Protais Mpiranya, who was a commander of the Rwanda Presidential Guard and is wanted by the United Nations, the state-run Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation said. The U.N. Rwanda tribunal will hand out the reward, AFP reported.
At least six people are still on the run for taking part in the Rwandan genocide, where an estimated 800,000 people were killed over the course of three months due to longstanding ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples.
Previously, Zimbabwe denied that Mpiranya was even in the country, but homicide police chief Peter Magwenzi told AFP they are trying to find him.
“We want him dead or alive. We are looking for information to arrest him, we don’t know how long he has been in the country,” he said.
Police said they believe he is using several aliases and is keeping a low profile.
