As part of the “Zero Minutes of Fame” campaign to keep notoriety out of the reach of mass shooters, a Chrome extension is being released that automatically scrubs news reports of the names and photos of the perpetrators.
More than 30 percent of mass shootings are inspired by previous killings, the campaign said.
“Instead of rewarding killers and inspiring copycats, we should be lifting up the stories and the lives of victims, heroes, and survivors,” Dan Gross, president of the campaign, said in a statement. “The fact is, notoriety serves as a reward for these killers and as a call-to-action for others who would seek to do similar harm in the name of infamy.”
Last year, a Virginia shooter who killed two of his colleagues at a local news station planned his murder to take place while on live broadcast, timing the act for maximum publicity.
“By simply downloading this plug-in, you can wipe away the killer’s name and image from your screen, and replace it with something that truly deserves our attention—the victims,” reads the extension’s description.
