Yusef Lateef, the legendary jazz musician and composer, has died, it was reported.
Lateef played jazz for more than 70 years throughout his career.
His wife Ayesha confirmed his death, reported the Detroit Free-Press. He died after suffering a short illness in September.
He performed last during the summer.
According to SPIN, he died Monday at his home in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, and he was also battling prostate cancer.
“My friend and mentor Brother Yusef Lateef has passed. We are blessed to have been on the planet the same time as Yusef Lateef,” wrote fellow jazz musician Sonny Rollins on Twitter.
Lateef, born William Huddleston in Tennessee, won the 1987 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album Yusef Lateef’s Little Symphony.
