SAN FRANCISCO—More than 1,000 students and parents came to the Bay Area College Fair at the Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Sponsored by the Princeton Review, The Epoch Times, and NTDTV, the one-day event featured a free practice PSAT, speakers on college admissions, as well as more than 50 representatives from local and nationally-known colleges, vocational schools, and learning centers.

Prospective students and their parents were there to get questions answered about the college admissions process and to see what each educational institution has to offer.

The Epoch Times interviewed representatives from National University, WestMed College, and E.nopi Learning Center about their unique programs.

National University

National University is the second-largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in California. With numerous campuses scattered throughout the state, and in Nevada and Orlando, Fla., the school offers a comprehensive online curriculum with monthly classes as well as an on-campus program. According to Associate Regional Dean Charlene Ashton, Ed.D., 75 percent of classes are online while 25 percent are onsite.

The university’s School of Education awards more teaching credentials than any institution in the state of California, according to Ashton. More and more students from community colleges and state colleges are enrolling in National University to fulfill their graduation requirements, she said.

“You can do it when you want to do it—it’s quality, and you learn just as much,” said Ashton, commenting on the online college model.

WestMed College

WestMed College, an affiliate of National University, is an allied health institution that trains and licenses paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), and licensed vocational nurses. Located in San Jose and Merced, the school offers classes at flexible times in the evenings and on weekends. The school also has a career placement center that points students to jobs and offers guidance on the job-seeking process.

“There is a huge need for nurses and paramedics [which] will never run out,” said Jolyn Camacho, Associate Regional Dean at WestMed College. The school offers a ten- to twelve-month training for nurses and paramedics and an eight-week program for EMTs, said Camacho.

The population on campus at WestMed is extremely diverse and serves students from ages 18 to 50 in its vocational nursing program. While some students attend straight out of high school, others enroll after attending four- to six-year colleges looking for vocational training to pursue a career in health care.

E.nopi Learning Center

E.nopi Learning Center in San Jose is part of a network of international education centers founded in Korea in 1976. The “E” in E.nopi represents “Education at a student eye level,” said E.nopi representative Susan Choi. With 250 million members globally and five locations in Northern California, E.nopi offers Math, Language Arts, and Korean educational enrichments for children in Pre-K through 12th grade.

On display at the college fair was E.nopi “Thinking Pento” and “Thinking cubes,” logical puzzles aimed at improving children’s logical and critical thinking skills. According to Choi, it has been shown that after ten or more years of being in the program, many students receive 100 percent on their SAT exams in both the math and language arts sections. The programs help students practice skills steadily but quickly in accordance with the high standards for quality set by the learning center, said Choi.

On Oct. 17, E.nopi will be hosting a Math Olympiad for students in first through eighth grades at the Cubberley Community Center. For each grade level, the first place competitor will receive a scholarship of $300, according to Choi.

The numerous educational institutions in attendance at the college fair included: Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale, University of Montana, University of Southern California, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Wisconsin-Madison, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced, Bay Area Optical Schools, Oikos University School of Nursing & Asian Medicine, Nine Star University of Health Sciences, E.nopi Learning Center, Sylvan Learning Center, Elite Educational Institute, etc.
