Around 40 separatists burst out of a jail in Southern Yemen after a prison demonstration culminated in a hand grenade being thrown by a guard.

Officials said that the men escaped in the melee following the explosion. Four inmates were injured in the blast, according to reports. The prisoners were demonstrating against an alleged detention without trial.

Separatists have been calling for Southern Yemen—a separate country until 1990—to no longer be under the rule of the government in Sana'a. A curfew has been imposed on the town of Dali, where the prison is based.
