The New York Yankees gave Joba Chamberlain a well deserved win after they beat the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers 2–1 on Sunday for the three-game sweep. For Chamberlain, it was his first win in nearly a month and couldn’t have come soon enough.

The Yankees pitcher improved his record to 5–2 and earned his first win in 10 starts at home.

Led by home runs in the fourth and sixth innings from Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira respectively, the Yankees got just enough firepower to defeat the Tigers for a third straight day and allowed their pitcher to do the rest.

Matching up against the All-Star pitcher Edwin Jackson, who allowed only two run in seven innings, Joba stepped up and gave a dominating performance of his own, staying on the mound for nearly seven innings and allowing only three hits.

Alex Rodriguez commented on Chamberlain’s strong outing with mlb.com, “Joba did a lot of good things. You don’t see guys throw 91 [mph] in the first and 97 in the seventh. He mixed in his curveball and his changeup much better today. If he does that, he’s going to be tough to beat.”

Sealing the victory for Chamberlain was Mariano Rivera, who closed out the game and earned his 26th save of the season.

After the game, Chamberlain reflected on the win, “Home is where your heart is and I think that’s something that I needed right there.”

The Yankees improved their record to 54–37 with a .593 percentage. They are now one game behind from the AL East leading Boston Red Sox.
