The New York Yankees completed a three-game home sweep of the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, beating them 6–3.

Just as they had in their previous two matchups this week, the Yanks dominated with solid pitching and contributions from their lineup.

On the mound for New York, CC Sabathia pitched a strong game, allowing only three runs and three hits before being relieved by Joba Chamberlain at the top of the eighth inning.

Mariano Rivera closed things out with three straight strikeouts in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

Sabathia has now won seven straight games against the O’s and was dominant in his 300th career start. His record this year is now 5–3.

Speaking with www.newyorkyankees.com, general manager Joe Girardi commented on their success during the three-game series against the Orioles, saying, “Our starting pitching was really good on this homes tand. We’ve won three series in a row, and we want to try to continue to do that.”

It didn’t take long for New York to put the pressure on Baltimore in this game.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Yankees jumped out to a 2–0 lead and once again Robinson Cano was a part of the action, doubling to deep center.

Cano has become an “Oriole Killer”—coming into Thursday’s game the Yankees slugger was hitting .455 with four home runs against Baltimore this season.

The Orioles’ Adam Jones homered in the top of the third but the Yankees came right back in the next inning as Alex Rodriguez blasted a home run to deep right, driving in Mark Teixeira.

Shortly after, Cano was sent home off a single by Curtis Granderson giving the Yanks a 5–1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, New York increased their lead after Brett Gardner nailed a solo home run to right.

Baltimore managed to score more than one run in a game for the first time in this series when they got two in the seventh as Luke Scott homered to deep right and drove in Ty Wigginton. But that was all the Orioles could muster against the Yankees strong bullpen.

The Yankees travel to Toronto for a three-game weekend series against the Blue Jays. The Yankees are firmly in second place in the AL East with Boston 2.5 games back and Toronto 3 back. The Yankees trail Tampa Bay by 2.5 games.
