In his first start at the new Yankee Stadium, Ricky Romero helped the Toronto Blue Jays avoid a four-game sweep as they held off a late surge by the Yankees to win 7–6.

The Jays got off to a hot start as Yankees starter Andy Pettitte relinquished six earned runs over his six innings on the mound.

For the rookie pitcher, Romero, it was his fourth straight win, however he saw his 24-inning scoreless streak snapped when Eric Hinske hit a homer in the fifth in his debut for the Yankees.

Romero gave up six hits and seven runs in 6 1/3 innings.

For the Yankees, the game was a disappointing finish to a 5–2 home stand against Seattle and Toronto, especially since it represented a missed chance to sweep their division rivals from Canada.

After falling behind 7–1 after 6 1/2 innings, the Yankees came close to tying the game. In their final three at bats, they scored five runs, but missed some big opportunities to complete the comeback stranding six runners in those three innings.

In the seventh, with runners on first and second, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez were both struck out by Brandon League to end the inning. With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Nick Swisher flied out.

Next, the Yankees travel to Minnesota and L.A. for three-game stints against the Twins and the Angels before taking four days off for the All-Star break.

NOTES: The Yankees, after running out of $5 senior citizen tickets, let around 170 seniors sit in $375 field level seats for $5, the Associated Press reported Yankee spokesman Jason Zillo as saying.
