A Tasmanian police officer has been killed in a shooting while attending a property in the state’s north-west.
According to Tasmania Police, the shooting occurred late on June 16 morning on Allison Road in North Motton.
Officers were conducting what authorities described as “routine duties” shortly after 11 a.m. when one of them was allegedly gunned down by a resident of the property.
Another officer returned fire at the suspected shooter, who subsequently surrendered at the scene. Police confirmed the injured officer died from critical injuries before medical help could arrive.
The alleged shooter was taken into custody without serious injuries.
Crime Scene Locked Down as Probe Begins
Police have sealed off Allison Road, with officers stationed at the intersections of Walkers Road, Preston Road, and Saltmarsh Road to maintain a secure perimeter.“This is a traumatic incident and wellbeing support is being provided to those involved and affected,” police said in a statement.
A full Professional Standards investigation has been launched, which is standard procedure in cases involving police firearm use.
The Coroner has been informed and is attending the scene as inquiries continue.
