The RCMP has executed search warrants at the homes of former Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, former councillor Sean Chu, and current councillor Andre Chabot, as well as at a city business.
The searches were linked to an “ongoing investigation,” the RCMP told The Epoch Times in an email, but it declined to disclose details of the case or comment on media reports that the search warrants were tied to an alleged corruption probe.
Gondek, who was defeated in her re-election bid in 2025, issued a brief media statement on March 24, confirming that officers executed a search warrant at her home last week and seized a cellphone.
“I’ve been fully cooperative and respect the legal process,” said Gondek, who served one term as Calgary’s mayor between 2021 and 2025.
She described the search as “very invasive” and said she will review the process with her lawyer to ensure the search was justified.
Chabot, who represents Ward 10, told reporters outside council chambers on March 24 that he still doesn’t know why RCMP officers carried out a search warrant at his home last week.
“I was asked to provide my devices for them to look at to gather evidence,” he said. “I was completely surprised. I had no idea why they had to do a warrant. I was more than happy to have given them my phones if they'd have just asked.”
Chabot said police did not question him and added that he hopes the seizure of his phone will help in the investigation. He said he has “nothing to hide” and does not think he is being investigated.
The Epoch Times contacted Chu and his lawyer Shamsher Kothari for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.
Chu served as councillor for Calgary’s Ward 4 for three terms beginning in 2013. He did not seek re-election last year.
The City of Calgary told The Epoch Times it is aware of the situation but offered few details about the investigation and didn’t say whether it will affect city council.
“The City has been made aware of the issue and is looking into it,” a spokesperson said in an email. “For this reason, we are unable to comment at this time.”
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas told reporters he has not been contacted by police and declined to discuss the matter further.
The RCMP confirmed in its email to The Epoch Times that the investigation is being handled by its Federal Policing Northwest Region unit and said the probe was launched after a referral from Calgary Police Services last October.
“To protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time,” a spokesperson said.
The CBC, citing unnamed sources, reported that the investigation pertains to claims of corruption associated with a business that was also the focus of a search warrant issued last week.
No charges have been laid thus far.
