A report from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada says a propeller malfunction caused a cargo plane to go off the runway in Naujaat, Nvt., two years ago.

The Calm Air International plane flew from Rankin Inlet to Naujaat with three crew members onboard in late November 2020.

When it touched down at the Naujaat Airport, the pilot lost directional control and the plane stopped about 33 metres from the runway.

The aircraft sustained substantial damage while the captain received serious injuries.

The investigation found a contaminant inside the left propeller’s high-pressure pump caused its pressure relief valve to fail.

As a result, the blade pitch became locked, preventing reverse thrust from activating and causing the plane to enter an asymmetrical thrust.
