A Hamilton man is facing several charges after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received multiple reports of a truck operating on just three wheels along a major southern Ontario highway on New Year’s Eve.

Burlington OPP began to receive reports at approximately 11:20 p.m. after multiple motorists spotted a badly damaged pickup truck driving along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in St. Catharines “with sparks flying,” police said in a social media post.

Officers intercepted a three-wheeled truck in Grimsby, Ont., and the driver was taken into custody, according to the post from the OPP Highway Safety Division.

Police say the driver was impaired and registered a blood-alcohol concentration more than twice the legal limit. The OPP also shared several photos of the vehicle in question, including one showing multiple empty beer cans inside the vehicle.

Further investigation uncovered that the man’s driver’s licence had been suspended since 2001.

A 47-year-old man from Hamilton has been charged with impaired operation, dangerous driving, driving while suspended, and impaired operation over 80, which refers to exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood within two hours of operating a conveyance.

“Drivers who risk the lives of others will face severe consequences,” the OPP said in its post, and thanked those who “planned ahead and celebrated responsibly” on New Year’s Eve.

Stunt Driving, Impaired Charges

A northern Ontario man is facing similar charges after the OPP received multiple reports on Jan. 3 of a vehicle driving “aggressively at high speeds” on Highway 17 near Nipigon, Ont., a town located 90 minutes northwest of Thunder Bay.
Nipigon OPP officers used a radar gun after locating the suspect vehicle and established it was travelling at 157 kilometres per hour in a designated 90 kilometre per hour zone, police said in a Jan. 4 press release.

“Further investigation determined the driver was impaired by alcohol,” police said. “The individual was arrested and transported to the detachment for additional testing.”

Twenty-year-old Konner Campbell of Geraldton, Ont., has been charged with impaired operation, impaired operation over 80, stunt driving, and novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on March 3.
