Police say they have charged two more suspects in connection with a home invasion, shooting, and kidnapping earlier this month in Markham, Ont.

The charges stem from a Sept. 1 incident in which a 54-year-old man was shot during a home invasion and police discovered that a woman who lived at the residence had been kidnapped, according to a Sept. 30 news release from York Regional Police.

“Through the investigation, officers learned a 29-year-old female who also resides at the residence of the home invasion, had been kidnapped earlier that morning, at approximately 8 a.m., in the area of McCowan Road and Highway 407,” police said in the release.

The female kidnapping victim’s vehicle was hit by one of the suspects’ vehicles, police said, and after getting out to check the damage, she was abducted into a second suspect’s vehicle. Police say she was later located in Toronto.

In addition to four arrests made on scene during the initial police response to the home invasion, police say search warrants executed Sept. 25 have resulted in charges for two more individuals from Ajax and Brampton in relation to the Sept. 1 incident.

Brendan Ghotra, 21, of Brampton has been charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Police have also charged Masih Mohamed, 26, of Ajax with a number of offences related to the Sept. 1 incident, including kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, failure to comply with release order, breach of probation, and possession of a master key.

According to police, the Sept. 1 incident included five suspects who went to the home of the kidnapping victim near McCowan Road and 14th Avenue.

“Uniformed officers arrived at the residence while the incident was still unfolding and ultimately arrested four suspects,” Det.-Sgt. Ryan Boulay said earlier this month. “The fifth suspect managed to flee on foot away from the residence and has not been located.”

Shakir Bhatti, 21, of Ajax; Parkaran Panglia 20, of Brampton; and two unnamed minors aged 16 and 17 years old were all charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a prohibited device, and possession of a restricted firearm without a licence.

According to Boulay, the 16-year-old who was initially arrested was already under a prior release order for unrelated offences, while Bhatti was released on bail Sept. 3.

The fifth suspect remains at large and is described as a man between 18 and 25 years old who was wearing dark clothing, a mask, and gloves at the time of the Sept. 1 incident.
