The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are laying charges after a traffic stop led to the discovery of a Scarborough resident in possession of explosive-making material.

Police officers of West Parry Sound OPP pulled over the driver of a vehicle travelling on Highway 400 on July 30 around 1 a.m., OPP said in an Aug. 6 release posted on Facebook. Police say the driver was wanted by another police service.

After stopping the vehicle, police discovered the passenger of the vehicle was carrying explosive-making items.

“Further investigation revealed the passenger in the vehicle was in possession of pipe bomb making material,” the OPP’s release says.

Police say the pipe bomb making material was seized by OPP and turned over to the OPP Explosives Disposal Unit.

A 33-year-old Scarborough resident was arrested and is facing several charges in connection with the incident.

The four charges include making or possessing explosives for an unlawful purpose, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failing to comply with a probation order, and possessing a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order.

OPP have not yet released the identity of or further information about the suspect.

The suspect was held for bail at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound and was set to appear in court on Aug. 6.
