Travellers are being warned flights may be delayed at airports across the country today after NAV Canada received bomb threats targeting its facilities in several cities.
Canada’s air navigation service provider said threats were received at facilities in Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver early this morning and air traffic control towers at all affected airports were evacuated.
Nav Canada posted an update less than an hour later, saying “service is gradually resuming at affected sites” after threat assessments were performed by local authorities.
“We thank airlines and passengers for their patience as we work towards normal operations,” the post said.
A U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson confirmed that ground stops have been lifted at the international airports in Ottawa and Montreal.
The Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport announced on X just after 8 a.m. that a security incident was under investigation and cautioned that operations could be affected. It advised travellers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.
The Ottawa Police Service said it was working with the Ottawa Airport to investigate the incident and would update the public as more information became available.
Several flights experienced delays this morning, according to the Ottawa International Airport website which offered no explanation for the delays. Departures from Ottawa began after 7:45 a.m., though certain flights remain delayed and others have been cancelled.
Officials at the Montreal airport were not immediately available for comment, but some flights have resumed according to the facility’s website. Several Air Canada flights were still listed as delayed as of 9:45 a.m.
Winnipeg Richardson International Airport had several delayed flights to Ottawa, Edmonton, and Vancouver but has not released a statement about the bomb threats and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Edmonton International Airport, YYC Calgary International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport also listed a number of delayed flights.
